Purpose

To evaluate the postoperative performance of a novel extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens regarding its visual outcomes, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria

Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Kepler University Clinic, Linz, Austria

Methods

The prospective study included patients after bilateral implantation of a DEN00V PureSee EDOF IOL (Johnson & Johnson, USA). Study examinations were performed minimum 4 weeks after surgery and included autorefraction, subjective refraction, assessment of monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA and CDVA in logMAR at 4m), binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate (UCIVA and DCIVA in logMAR at 66 cm) and near visual acuity (UCNVA and DCNVA in logRAD at 40 cm) and binocular defocus curve in logMAR. Furthermore, patient satisfaction and postoperative spectacle independence were assessed using a validated German questionnaire (Cataract and Lens Ophthalmic Questionnaire).

Results

In total, 102 eyes of 51 patients were included in this study. A mean spherical equivalent of -0.25 D (± 0.40) on the right eye and -0.17 D (± 0.37) on the left eye could be demonstrated. Mean binocular UCDVA and CDVA were -0.06 logMAR (± 0.07) and -0.10 logMAR (± 0.06), respectively. Mean UCIVA and DCIVA were 0.04 logMAR (± 0.09) and 0.08 logMAR (± 0.08), while a mean UCNVA of 0.296 logRAD (± 0.14) and BCNVA of 0.358 logRAD (± 0.14) were reported. Thirty-four patients (67%) achieved full or almost full spectacle independence, while only six patients (12%) reported constant dependency on reading glasses. Postoperative patient satisfaction was high, with 94% of patients very satisfied with the visual outcome.

Conclusions

The PureSee EDOF IOL provided good distance visual acuity as well as enhanced intermediate visual acuity. Patients reported a high level of postoperative satisfaction as well as substantial spectacle independence.
