Purpose
To evaluate the corneal endothelial cell density and morphology in Libyan patients with
Pseudoexfolition syndrome.
Setting
Pseudoexfolition causes characteristic corneal endothelial change leading to corneal
decompensation and loss of corneal transparency severely affecting vision
Methods
The present study was hospital-based cross-sectional observational study, which included 80 patients was conducted at OPD in the TEH planned for cataract surgery, two groups were formed, namely the PES group and the control group (The right eyes of 40 patients were diagnosed with
pseudoexfoliation material by slit lamp examination and the right eyes of 40 patients in control group without any eye problems were examined.Specular microscopy was performed on all eyes to evaluate corneal endothelial cell density (END); coefficient of variation (CV) in cell size, percentage of hexagonal cell; and central corneal thickness (CCT).
Results
The mean ECD was 2191.657±598.81in PES group and 2581.775±239.15 in control group ,the ECD in PES group was significantly lower than in that in the control group (p=0.007).The percentage of hexagonal was 50 in PES group and 54 in the control group , the percentage of hexagonal cell was significantly lower than in the control group (p=0.002).The cell size coefficient of variation was 34.8±3.546 in PES group and 30.15±2.751 in the control group , and patients with PES had significant difference in cell size coefficient of variation compared to control group ( p=0.008). The CCT was 500.675in the PES group and 507.45 in control group and the CCT in PES group was no statistically significant difference in CCT compared to control group (P=0.321).
Conclusions
Serious morphological changes occur in the corneal endothelium in patients with PES. Because of
these changes in the corneal endothelium, it is recommended to perform specular microscopy
measurement before cataract surgery for all patients who have PES detected in their examination.
