Purpose
To analyze the managment of posterior capsule opacification with primary posterior capsulorhexis
Setting
Private practice
Methods
A retrosprective review of cases that presented with intraoperative persistent posterior capsule opacification and were managed with primary posterior capsulorhexis.
Results
6 cases were analyzed. In all cases, posterior subcapsular cataract was present before surgery. No unintentional capsule rupture was noted in any case. In all cases a manual, continuous posterior capsulorhexis was created before IOL implantation. Different IOLs were used but they were all positioned inside the capsular bag at the end. No post-operative complications were noted.
Conclusions
Primary posterior capsulorhexis may be a safe technique to manage persistent posterior capsule opacification during surgery. Surgical technique can be performed with minimal aditional training for a competent cataract surgeon.
