Purpose

To evaluate the image quality in cornea guttata patients before and after cataract surgery with implantation of same type of hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens.

Setting

Department of ophthalmology, Specialised Hospital for Active Treatment of Eye Deseases “Zrenieto”

Methods

The study content 35 patients (70 eyes). The study is prospective cohort study. Coaxial US phacoemulsification was performed in 1 eye (US group) and coaxial nanosecond laser–assisted cataract surgery in the contralateral eye (laser group) of the same patient. The central endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation (CoV) in cell size (objective measure of polymegethism), and percentage of hexagonal cells (an index of pleomorphism) were evaluated. The measurement of light scatter using the Optical Quality Analysis System (OSI index) in both groups, before and in the third month after surgery and once a year until the fifth year.

Results

We present the endothelial cell changes observed in two groups before and after surgery. The OSI index of the patients before and after surgery of the two groups has been analyzed using 2-tailed unpaired t tests. Correlations were examined by using the bivariate Pearson method or, when data were not normally distributed, the Spearman ρ coefficient. P < .05 was considered statistically significant.

Conclusions

The observed parameters differed statistically significantly in the two groups during the study period. The observed parameters differed statistically significantly in the two groups during the study period. The nanosecond cataract surgery presents some advantages in comparison of standard ultrasound phacoemulsification in compromised corneas.
