Purpose

To provide real-world reference values for ocular biometry findings in Greek phacoemulsification surgery candidates measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).

Setting

Ophthalmiatreio Athinon, a public, tertiary, Specialized Eye Hospital, in Athens, Greece

Methods

This retrospective single-center study included patients undergoing preoperative assessment for phacoemulsification at a tertiary eye hospital in Athens between July 2024 and July 2025. Biometric measurements were acquired using Swept Source – Optical Coherence Tomography (Argos; Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA). Parameters included axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), white-to-white distance (WTW), keratometry (K1, K2), and anterior corneal astigmatism (CA).

Results

The cohort comprised 6,258 eyes from 3,726 patients, with a mean age of 73.36 ± 8.41 years. Mean AL was 23.77 ± 1.21 mm, ACD 3.23 ± 0.39 mm, LT 4.67 ± 0.40 mm, and WTW 11.92 ± 0.42 mm. Mean keratometry values were K1 43.11 ± 1.66 D and K2 44.10 ± 1.74 D. Anterior corneal astigmatism showed a markedly right-skewed distribution (mean 0.99 ± 0.94 D; median 0.78 D).

Conclusions

This large biometry dataset establishes robust, population-specific reference values for ocular biometric parameters in Greek phacoemulsification candidates. This data may support more accurate preoperative assessment, aid in intraocular lens planning, and improve refractive predictability in routine cataract surgery.
