Purpose
To report signs of non-flap, planar Descemet membrane detachment during phacoemulsification.
Setting
Descemet membrane detachment (DMD) is a significant complication during phacoemulsification. While flap-type detachments are commonly apparent, non-flap, planar DMD can be subtle and hard to detect. Early recognition of DMD facilitate prompt management and improves surgical outcome.
Methods
We present two cases of intraoperatively detected non-flap, planar DMD which occurred at different surgical stages during phacoemulsification, with distinct intraoperative presentation. In both cases, the detachments were identified during surgery and intraoperative reattachment were accomplished.
Results
During the early postoperative period, both patients had clear cornea and good visual outcome.
Conclusions
Early recognition of DMD allows prompt management and can lead to favorable anatomical and functional outcomes.
