Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the role of the lens thickness on the postoperative outcomes after cataract surgery.

Setting

Lens thickness is one of the most important biometric factors that should be taken into consideration in the IOL calculation and planning. The lens thickness is considered a key parameter in the ELP prediction and in the postoperative refractive outcomes.

Methods

The study was structured as a cross-sectional, observational investigation conducted across two international clinical sites, where biometric data were collected from cataract patients planned for phacoemulsification with IOL implantation. The participating centers included the Department of Ophthalmology at Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary),  and the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (Prishtina, Kosovo).

A total of 1318 patients from two centers were included in the study, 911 Hungarian patients and 407 Kosovan patients.

Using Pearson’s correlation, we analyzed the correlation between lens thickness and the 1-month postoperative distance visual acuity in the two groups of patients.

Results

Mean lens thickness in Hungarian patients was 4.40 mm whreas  in Kosovan patients  mean lens thickness was 4.30 mm. There was a statistically significant difference (P=0.001), in the mean lens thickness between countries.

According to our findings, there was a negative correlation (r = −0.096), which is statistically significant at the 1% level (p = 0.003), between the lens thickness and the distance visual acuity after surgery in Hungarian patients; therefore, the greater the lens thickness before surgery, the lower the postoperative visual outcome. On the other hand there was a positive correlation between visual acuity and lens thickness in Kosovan patients, with a coefficient of r = 0.030, which was not statistically significant.

Conclusions

In conclusion, according to our findings, lens thickness is an important prediciting factor for the postoperative refractive outcomes after cataract surgery.
