Purpose

OBJECTIVES:

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

  • To investigate the prevalence and complications of pseudoexfoliation syndrome, among Omani patients undergoing cataract surgery presenting at Al Nahda Hospital.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE:

  • To describe the relation of glaucoma to pseudoexfoliation syndrome.
  • To find out the complications associated with PXF in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Setting

All Omani patients aged 40 years or older, who underwent cataract surgery from the first of January 2023 till the end of June 2023 at Al-Nahda hospital (ANH)

Methods

A retrospective descriptive study

Results

  • 600 eyes (578 patients) were enrolled in the study.
  • In this study, we found that out of 600 eyes (578 patients), 556 patients were operated in unilateral eye, and 22 patients were operated bilaterally.
  • Out of 578 patients, 70 patients had PXF syndrome.
  • The prevalence of pseudoexfoliation among 578 patients was 12.1% (95% CI = 9.56% - 15.05%).
  • The study found that PXF was more common among female patients 49 compared to male patients 21.

Conclusions

•This study is the first in Oman to report the prevalence of PXF in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
•Pseudoexfoliation in undergoing cataract surgery patients in the Omani population is a common occurrence with a prevalence of 12.1%.
•PXF syndrome poses significant challenges in cataract surgery, with increased risks of intraoperative and postoperative complications.
•This study will help in bridging the gaps in knowledge and help in the prevention of complications associated with PXF as well as resource allocation to try to manage such patients safely.
