Purpose
To report a rare and unusual case of yellow discoloration of an intraocular lens (IOL) associated with long-term topical exposure to turmeric (Curcuma longa), highlighting a potential non-pharmacological cause of postoperative IOL colour change.
Setting
Detailed clinical evaluation, slit-lamp photography, and patient history were analysed in a 60+ year-old woman with pseudophakia who presented with yellowish discoloration of ocular tissues and the implanted IOL.
Report of case
The patient had a 25-year history of daily periocular and facial application of turmeric as part of a traditional practice. Slit-lamp examination revealed diffuse yellow staining of periocular skin, conjunctiva, cornea, and a distinct yellow discoloration of the IOL optic. No signs of uveitis, IOL opacification, calcification, or posterior capsular opacification were noted. Visual acuity remained relatively preserved.
Conclusion/Take home message
Chronic external exposure to turmeric may result in pigment deposition and discoloration of intraocular structures, including IOLs. This appears to be a benign but visually striking phenomenon with important counselling and documentation implications for cataract surgeons.
