Purpose

It is of utmost importance to assess functional vision and prescription selective absorption filters in athletes with low vision. The visual functions of these patients, who have moderate to severe vision loss, are further compromised by changes in light intensity throughout the day.

Setting

Evaluation of functional vision with studies that included general ophtalmic evaluations: visual acuity (EDTRS), visual fields (Humphrey low vision test), contrast sensitivity (Pelli Robson )tests and color vision tests (Farnsworth 15). Visual aids tested from his 6 th to his 22 years old were galileo telescopes, optical and electronica magnifiers, nono optical devices and selective UV filters.

Report of case

14 years follow up of a 22-year-old patient diagnosed with ROP, bilateral congenital cataracts, and retinal detachment in the right eye and
Pseudophakia in the left eye. The patient underwent visual stimulation in childhood and visual rehabilitation in adolescence, successfully completing their studies and becoming a
Paralympic athlete. Visual acuity for small objects is 20/200 with a Galileo 4x16 monocular telescope; visual acuity is 20/100.
A selective filter trial resulted in VA 20/80, improving contrast sensitivity parameters, achieving visual stability outdoors.

Conclusion/Take home message

Congenital cataract surgery in patients with ROP and subsequent visual rehabilitation and selective UV filters,
allow not only the achievement of unimaginable goals but also the improvement of the quality of life of low vision patients.
