Purpose
To assess the correlation between dysfunctional lens index (DLI) and pentacam nuclear staging (PNS) in eyes with cataract.
Setting
Tertiary private eye hospital, Mumbai, India
Methods
It’s a retrospective study where subjects who underwent cataract workup, including ocular biometry, higher order aberration measurement, and objective grading of cataract using pentacam were included. Subjects with nuclear sclerosis (NS) grade I-IV with and without cortical (CO) and posterior subcapsular (PSC) cataract were included. Subjects with missing data were excluded. Subjects were divided into four different groups: only NS, NS+CO, NS+PSC, and NS+CO+PSC. Pearson correlation was carried out to understand the association between DLI and PNS in different types of cataract.
Results
104 eyes were considered for analysis, where 37 eyes had NS, 21 had NS+CO, 24 had NS+PSC and 22 had NS+CO+PSC. Overall, a significant but weak negative association was noted between DLI and PNS (r=-0.28, p=0.004). In eyes with NS a significant moderate association was noted between DLI and PNS (r=-0.44, p=0.006); however, no association of DLI and PNS was noted in other groups involving either CO or PSC or both (Pearson correlation, p>0.05).
Conclusions
DLI showed a moderate negative association with PNS in eyes with only nuclear sclerosis.
