Purpose
The ARTIS Symbiose intraocular lens (IOL) system (Cristalens Industrie, France) introduces a complementary approach to multifocality: one IOL extends depth of focus to enhance intermediate vision (ARTIS Symbiose MID), while the fellow eye is optimized for near vision (ARTIS Symbiose PLUS), in addition to distance. This monocentric clinical study aimed to comprehensively evaluate visual acuity across distances with the ARTIS Symbiose system and to compare its performance with a conventional diffractive multifocal IOL, the AcrySof IQ PanOptix (Alcon, TX, USA).
Setting
Single-center university ophthalmology clinic Heidelberg; propective, blinded study
Methods
In total, 101 eyes of 51 patients were randomized to bilateral implantation with either AcrySof IQ PanOptix or the ARTIS Symbiose IOL system. Distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity as well as defocus curves were compared between ARTIS MID, ARTIS PLUS, and AcrySof IQ PanOptix. Postoperative follow-up was performed at 1, 6, and 12 months, including uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity at 80 cm (UIVA, DCIVA), and near outcomes (UNVA, DCNVA). At 1 month, distance-corrected defocus curves and monocular and binocular contrast sensitivity were additionally assessed.
Results
At 1 month, binocular outcomes for the ARTIS Symbiose system were UDVA/CDVA 0.03/−0.05 logMAR and UIVA/CIVA 0.02/0.04 logMAR. AcrySof IQ PanOptix achieved UDVA/CDVA −0.04/−0.09 logMAR and UIVA/CIVA 0.01/0.01 logMAR. At 6 months, ARTIS Symbiose showed UDVA/CDVA 0.00/−0.08, UIVA/CIVA −0.01/0.00, and UNVA/DCNVA 0.08/0.09 logMAR, while PanOptix demonstrated UDVA/CDVA −0.09/−0.11, UIVA/DCIVA −0.02/−0.02, and UNVA/DCNVA 0.01/0.00 logMAR. Distance-corrected defocus curves showed ranges from +0.50 to −2.75 D for ARTIS and +0.50 to −3.00 D for PanOptix at 12 months.
Conclusions
Both the complementary diffractive IOL system and the conventional diffractive multifocal IOL provided favorable functional vision across distance, intermediate, and near ranges. The progressive improvement in binocular visual acuity supports the effectiveness of the ARTIS Symbiose concept. Ongoing detailed analyses will further characterize visual acuity and defocus curve performance over time.
