Purpose

To evaluate visual outcomes and patient satisfaction following bilateral implantation of the Clareon PanOptix versus Tecnis Odyssey IOL in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Setting

Multi-center, private practice (4 sites)

Methods

This was a prospective, randomized, double masked, multicenter study of post-cataract surgery patients with bilateral implantation of Clareon Panoptix or Tecnis Odyssey IOLs. A total of 246 patients (123 each group) were targeted. Patients were evaluated at 3 months postoperatively for uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuities at distance (UDVA, CDVA), intermediate (UIVA, DCIVA; 60cm), and near (UNVA, DCNVA; 40cm and 33cm). Contrast sensitivity was also measured under mesopic and photopic conditions. Patient reported satisfaction and dysphotopsias were assessed with QUVID and IOLSAT questionnaires, and defocus curves were also measured.

Results

Preliminary results showed in the Odyssey group (n=27), mean binocular photopic distance-corrected visual acuities (logMAR) at 3 months were -0.08 ± 0.11 (CDVA), 0.12 ± 0.19 (DCIVA), 0.15 ± 0.16 (DCNVA 40cm), and 0.24 ± 0.11 (DCNVA 33cm), compared with -0.07 ± 0.09 (CDVA), 0.03 ± 0.17 (DCIVA), 0.08 ± 0.18 (DCNVA 40cm), and 0.20 ± 0.12 (DCNVA 33cm) in the PanOptix group (n=17). The percentage reporting starburst, halo, or glare as “Never” or “Rarely” was 38%, 35%, and 62% in Odyssey vs 54%, 38%, and 63% in PanOptix. Spectacle independence at intermediate and near was 94% and 82% in Odyssey and 100% and 96% in PanOptix. Additional data collection is ongoing.

Conclusions

Interim results suggest that implantation with Odyssey and PanOptix IOLs results in excellent visual acuities at distance, intermediate, near, and extreme near. There was a trend toward better intermediate and near visual acuity with PanOptix vs Odyssey. Both groups experienced visual disturbances. Additional data collection is ongoing.
