Purpose

To evaluate patient-reported visual outcomes, dysphotopsia, spectacle independence, and satisfaction following implantation of the HOYA Gemetric multifocal intraocular lens.

Setting

Retrospective clinical evaluation of consecutive cataract and lens exchange patients implanted with the HOYA Gemetric multifocal IOL in a single surgeon practice in South Wales, UK.

Methods

243 patients undergoing cataract and lens exchange surgery with implantation of the HOYA Gemetric multifocal intraocular lens were retrospectively reviewed. Patient-reported outcomes were collected at follow-up using a standard set of questions and responses entered into the CLEARlog software. Questions included dysphotopsia symptoms (halos, glare, starbursts), need for spectacles at different distances, and overall satisfaction including willingness to repeat surgery and alignment of results with surgical expectations. Results were analysed using the Reporting function within CLEARlog and from downloaded datasets.

Results

Of 241 patients, outcomes matched expectations in 95.5% and 99.6% would undergo the surgery again.
Spectacle independence was high: 97.1% never requiring distance glasses, 97.9% never requiring intermediate glasses and 88.8% never requiring reading glasses, while 10.7% required them sometimes – for very small print or reading in dim light. Therefore, 99.5% needed reading glasses either Never or only Sometimes.
Dysphotopsias were uncommon: halos were reported as sometimes in 30.9% and always in 6.9% - mostly being only mild or moderate in intensity. Glare occurred sometimes in 6% with most being of mild or moderate intensity. Starbursts occurred in 8.6% of patients with most being of mild or moderate intensity.

Conclusions

The HOYA Gemetric multifocal intraocular lens implantation demonstrated very high patient satisfaction, strong spectacle independence for distance, intermediate and near vision. Dysphotopsia symptoms were low in terms of frequency and intensity. Satisfaction was very high and the vast majority would have the surgery again or recommend it to friends and family.

The HOYA Gemetric multifocal intraocular lens is an excellent option for patients seeking to minimise their need for glasses after cataract or lens exchange surgery, yielding very high levels of glasses independence and patient satisfaction.
