Purpose
To describe the demographics, clinical characteristics and visual outcomes of patients in Mauritius undergoing lens replacement with a full-range intraocular lens (IOL) incorporating spiral optics.
Setting
Single-centre, single surgeon, retrospective consecutive case series in Mauritius.
Methods
All patients undergoing lens replacement with the full-range spiral optic IOL (Galaxy, Rayner UK) between November 2024 and January 2026 were included. Demographics, pre- and postoperative visual acuity (VA), refraction, and higher-order aberrations (HOA) were recorded. Preoperative and postoperative unaided distance visual acuity (UDVA) were compared using paired analysis. Postoperative unaided intermediate (UIVA, 100cm) and near visual acuity (UNVA, 30cm) were analysed. Refractive accuracy was assessed by deviation from intended refraction. Association between baseline HOA (<0.30 vs ≥0.30 µm) and achievement of UDVA ≤0.20 logMAR was evaluated using chi-squared testing.
Results
Over 15 months, 109 eyes of 60 patients underwent surgery. This was bilateral in 49 patients (82%), of whom 48 underwent immediate sequential surgery. Mean age was 64.5 ± 10.8 years (range 44–88); the female-to-male ratio was 3:2. Mean preoperative HOA was 0.24 ± 0.09 µm. Mean UDVA improved from LogMAR 0.41 ± 0.54 to LogMAR 0.05 ± 0.11 at 2 weeks (paired p < 0.001). Postoperative mean UIVA was LogMAR –0.10 ± 0.09 and mean UNVA was LogMAR 0.23 ± 0.08. UDVA ≤ LogMAR 0.0 was achieved by 62% and 88% achieved LogMAR ≤0.20. Eighty-four percent were within ±0.50 D of intended refraction. Achievement of UDVA ≤ LogMAR 0.20 was not associated with baseline HOA status (χ², p = 0.55). All but one patient reported spectacle independence postoperatively.
Conclusions
Lens replacement with the Galaxy spiral full-range IOL resulted in a statistically significant improvement in distance visual acuity with high refractive accuracy. Strong postoperative distance and intermediate performance with functional near vision were observed. Visual outcomes appear independent of baseline higher-order aberration levels over the range in our cohort (0.10-0.53µm). Immediate sequential bilateral surgery appears well suited to this platform, with high reported rates of spectacle independence.
