Purpose
To present the recent data from the ESCRS EUREQUO Cataract Registry evaluating trends in surgical practice, outcomes, and complications in modern cataract surgery.
Setting
For 2024, clinics from the following 12 countries contributed data to Eurequo: Australia, Austria, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
Methods
Data from the EUREQUO cataract database were analyzed for the year 2024. The registry includes data collected from participating clinics across multiple European countries. Included parameters were patient demographics, preoperative visual acuity, ocular comorbidities, type of surgery, intraocular lens (IOL) types, intra and postoperative complications, biometry, and refractive outcomes. Visual and refractive outcomes were assessed in cases with available follow-up data.
Results
In 2024, 363,039 cataract surgeries from 12 countries were recorded, for a cumulative total to 4.9 million since 2007. Phacoemulsification with posterior chamber IOL implant accounted for 98.9% of procedures. Toric IOL was the most common premium IOL and Small Pupil was the main ocular comorbidity. Posterior capsule rupture was the most common intraoperative complication (0.39%). Follow-up data were available for 54% of cases. Mean BCVA improved from 0.448 preoperatively to 0.939 postoperatively; BCVA ≥0.5 was achieved in 92.6% of eyes and ≥1.0 in 68.6%. The mean absolute biometry prediction error was 0.56D, with 84.95% of eyes within ±1.0D of target. Cystoid macular edema was the most common postoperative complications (1.12%)
Conclusions
The EUREQUO registry continues to provide large-scale real-world data on cataract surgery across multiple countries. Outcomes remain highly favorable, with low complication rates and excellent visual and refractive results, confirming safety and effectiveness of modern cataract surgery.
