Purpose

To compare the visual acuity of patients who have had a presbyopic allogeneic corneal inlay (ACI) implanted in their non-dominant eye with the other eye, and to evaluate its effect on binocular visual acuity.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul Medipol University Hospital, Istanbul, Türkiye

Methods

This study included 26 patients who underwent ACI implantation for presbyopia in their non-dominant eye and had a follow-up period of more than 4 years. Unoperated dominant eyes were considered as a control group. Long-term changes in distance, near, intermediate, and binocular visual acuity of both eyes were examined.

Results

The average age of the 26 patients included in the study was found to be 56.3 ± 0.6 years. Uncorrected near and intermediate visual acuity (UCNVA, UCIVA) values were significantly better in the operated eyes (P<0.05), while corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) values were better in the control group (P<0.05).When we compared the operated eyes with preoperative values, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), CDVA and corrected near visual acuity (CNVA) remained unchanged (P>0.05), while a significant increase was found in UCNVA and UCIVA values (P<0.05). While binocular visual acuity remained unchanged in UCDVA, CDVA, and CNVA compared to preoperative values (P>0.05), an increase was found in UCNVA and UCIVA values (P<0.05).

Conclusions

In the long term, while there was a slight decrease in CDVA was observed in presbyopic eyes implanted with ACI, this did not significantly affect binocular visual acuity. Intermediate and near vision improvements in presbyopic eyes implanted with ACI remained effective even after 4 years.
