Purpose
To analyze cataract surgery parameters using the data from a large number of phacoemulsifiers.
Setting
Nationwide collection (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT06659419) of the data from centers using Active Sentry (AS) (pressure sensor embedded in the handpiece) and non-AS Centurion phacoemulsifiers. The records from the last 1000 procedures performed with each phacoemulsifier were collected in 50 centers (17 public hospitals and 33 private clinics.
Methods
Retrospective registry study. The procedures captured in the database were performed between December 2021 and August 2025. The following parameters were analyzed: duration of ultrasound usage (US), total case duration, Cumulated Dissipated Energy (CDE), BSS volume, torsional and longitudinal energy usage, maximum infusion pressure, vitrectomy mode.
Results
The data from 116931 procedures were analyzed. The mean US duration was 63.5±39.1” (torsional 59.0±36.6” and longitudinal 4.5±8.3”). The mean total duration of the steps using the phacoemulsifier was 10’54”±7’06”. The mean CDE was 9.9±7.9. The mean maximum infusion pressure setting was 66.9±9.5mmHg. The mean volume of BSS used during the surgical steps was 94.3±47.4cc. There were 53488 procedures performed with AS and 63443 with non-AS phacoemulsifiers. The median duration of US usage was 55.0” with AS and 57.0” with non-AS (p<0.001). The median CDE was 7.9 with AS and 8.5 with non-AS (p<0.001). Overall, the vitrectomy mode was used in 506 (0.4%) cases.
Conclusions
On average, cataract surgery was performed using the phacoemulsifier for less than 11 minutes. The study results can be used as a benchmark to assess the current and future generations of phacoemulsifiers
