Purpose

To evaluate the functional visual outcomes and quality of vision obtained with a spiral refractive full range of field (FRoF) intraocular lens (IOL) at one year follow-up.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology. University Vithas International University Hospital. Madrid-Alicante Spain

Methods

This prospective, multicenter, longitudinal, observational, and non-comparative study included a total of 72 patients with mean age 65,65 ± 9,14 years old (r 49-79) All cases underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant  of RayOne Galaxy® IOL (Rayner, West Sussex, UK) implantation. Visual acuity was assessed 12 months post-surgery, including corrected and uncorrected visual acuity  for far ((UDVA, CDVA), intermediate (UIVA, DCIVA), and near (UNAV, DCNVA)  distances, photopic and mesopic achromatic contrast sensitivity (CS) (CSV-1000 test), halos and glare (Eyeland Design Network GmbH®), improvement in quality of life, satisfaction rates, and spectacle independence.

Results

All cases achieved binocular CDVA values ≤ 0.0 logMAR, DCIVA ≤ 0.1 logMAR, and DCNVA ≤ 0.2 logMAR. The defocus curve showed CDVA (0.0D)  -0,05 ± 0,02 logMAR, DCIVA (-1,5D) -0,02 ± 0,01 and DCNVA (-2,5D) 0,10 ± 0,07. Regarding CS distance at 3,6,12,18 c/d in photopic CS were 6±1,51, 5,32 ± 1,16, 5,80 ± 1,37, 4,12 ± 1,08 and in mesopic CS 5,66 ± 1,57, 5,29 ± 1,29,  5,79 ± 1,74, 4,15 1,10 respectively. The average halo size was 28.5 ± 16.21, with 97.2% of cases reporting no clinically significant halos and 100% without glare.16.66% of eyes required posterior capsulotomy with mean time of 323.44 ± 95.12 days (r146–386). Spectacle independence was achieved in 93.0% for distance vision, 94.4% for intermediate vision, and 84.7% for near vision.

.

Conclusions

The evaluated FRoF IOL provides, at one year of follow-up, functional performance that allows good levels of visual acuity for far, intermediate and near vision with minimal impact on contrast sensitivity at distance, minimal dysphotopsia and acceptable spectacle independence.

These visual outcomes  remained stable since the first month of follow-up.
