Purpose
To compare FS-LASIK centration aided by pupil center to SMILE PRO aided by centration guide i.e. proposed corneal vertex/visual axis based on the preoperative x and y coordinates from ATLAS tomography. To compare induced aberrations affecting the quality of vision in both groups.
Setting
Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital Bangalore
Methods
This is a retrospective, interventional non-randomized comparative study with a total of 60 age matched subjects, 30 each from FS-LASIK and SMILE PRO groups for varying degrees of myopia. Follow-up visits were at day 1 , 2 weeks and 3 months. The spherical equivalent (SE), OSI using HDA and aberrations using ITRACE were compared between the two groups.
Results
The residual SE in the FS LASIK group on POD 15 was -0.03 +/- 0.15 while in SMILE group it was none. On POD 15 SMILE group had x and y coordinates 0.008 +/- 0.153 and 0.06 +/- 0.10 respectively while in FS LASIK it was 0.02 +/- 0.18 and 0.03 +/- 0.08 respectively. The OSI in SMILE group was 0.7 +/-0.48 while in FS LASIK were 0.50+/- 0.25. Higher order aberrations in SMILE group on POD 15 were 0.192 +/- 0.125 while in FS LASIK group were 0.109 +/- 0.05 on POD 15. Coma was seen to be 0.046 +/- 0.03 in FS LASIK and 0.130 +/- 0.124 in SMILE group.
Conclusions
SMILE PRO was found to show better results in terms of treatment centration and residual spherical equivalent and FS LASIK was seen to be better in terms of induced aberrations and OSI. As patient satisfaction is most important in refractive surgery, quality of vision assessment offers a more detailed evaluation of patient outcomes.
