Purpose
To evaluate and compare the surface roughness of porcine corneal stromal bed after femtosecond laser flap creation using the Zeiss VisuMax 800, using different contact glass sizes.
Setting
The laser treatment was performed at Clinica Baviera Italia, Milan, Italy. The surface roughness analysis was conducted at the Department of Medical, Surgical Sciences and Health, University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy.
Methods
Ten porcine eyes were treated with the Zeiss VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap. Five eyes employing the small size (S) anatomy-fitting contact glass and five with the medium size (M). Surface roughness was quantitatively analyzed using a Sensofar confocal optical profilometer, measuring key roughness parameters. The roughness profiles obtained with the M size were compared to those generated with the S size to assess structural differences.
Results
The analysis revealed that the Zeiss VisuMax 800 granted a smooth cutting surface at a low cutting time. The overall mean roughness shows an evenly distributed pattern with no relevant bridges or focal alterations. A mild difference in the mean roughness was observed between the S and M sizes.
Conclusions
This study highlights that Zeiss VisuMax 800 is able to perfom corneal flaps at high-speed cutting rates, realising smoorh corneal cuts .Differences between the S and M sizes need further investigations to be better characterized.
