Purpose
To compare the visual acuities and defocus curves of the Vivinex Impress enhanced monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with those of the AcrySof IQ standard monofocal IOL
Setting
COMP TRIAL. N=144. Germany (Augen- und Laserklinik Castrop-Rauxel, Charité Berlin, MVZ Augenklinik Petrisberg, Universitäts-Augenklinik Heidelberg, Universitätsklinikum Freiburg, Universitätsklinikum Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum, Universitätsmedizin Mainz), Philippines (Asian Eye Institute Rockwell, Peregrine Eye Laser Inst), Poland (Centrum Diagnostyki I Mikrochirurgii Oka LENS, Centrum Medyczne), Spain (Clínica Oftalvist Jerez, Clínica Oftalvist Madrid, University Hospital Ramón y Cajal)
Methods
This study is a prospective, multi-center, active-controlled trial involving a 2:1 randomization of bilateral implantation of either the Vivinex Impress (test group, n=98) or the AcrySof IQ (control group, n=46). At month 12, the first eye distance-corrected visual acuity (CDVA), mean monocular distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) and uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), as well as monocular photopic distance-corrected defocus testing, were evaluated.
Results
All clinical trial participants had a CDVA of 0.3 logMAR or better. The test arm showed a significant DCIVA improvement: 1.2 lines under photopic conditions (P<0.001) and 0.7 lines under mesopic conditions (P=0.01). UCIVA also improved significantly for the test arm (0.8 lines; P<0.001). CDVA differences between arms were not significant (P=0.07). Photopic monocular distance-corrected defocus curves demonstrated that the test IOL outperformed the control IOL from ‑1.0 through -2.5 D.
Conclusions
The Vivinex Impress enhanced monofocal IOL provides a statistically significantly improvement in intermediate vision (66 cm) under both photopic and mesopic conditions compared to standard aspheric monofocal IOLs. Defocus testing from -1.0 to -2.5 D shows this extended vision range, making Vivinex Impress an excellent option for patients seeking wider range of vision.
