Purpose

The clinical effects of clear type amniotic contact lens was investigated in patients with corneal epithelial defect who did not respond to treatment with therapeutic contact lens and medical treatment.

Setting

Clear type amniotic contact lens (MS Bio's Co., South Korea) was applied to 29 patients, 29 eyes who visited Dong-A University Hospital's ophthalmology clinic from Dec. 2023 to Aug. 2024 and had severe superficial punctate keratitis or corneal epithelial defect that did not respond to therapeutic contact lens and medical treatment.

Methods

Best-corrected visual acuity, size of epithelial defect, corneal sensitivity, tear break up time and corneal opacity were measured for patients who had undergone observation at before, 2, 4 and 12 weeks, and treatment success rate and complications were analyzed during the follow-up period.

Results

There was significant difference in best-corrected visual acuity, size of epithelial defect, corneal sensitivity and corneal opacity between before and 2, 4 and 12 weeks after the procedure, but there was no significant difference in tear break up time. 20.7% of 29 eyes need additional amniotic contact lens wearing or temporary amniotic membrane transplantation. In 41.4% of 29 eyes, the amniotic contact lens placed well during a week without detach. There was no complications.

Conclusions

The clear type amniotic contact lens in patient with corneal epithelial defect is efficient procedure that can be performed in an outpatient clinic unlike amniotic membrane transplantation. And it can produce effective result in indicators such as best-corrected visual acuity, cornea epithelial healing, corneal sensitivity, tear break up time, and corneal opacity.
