Purpose

Extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) is a promising intraocular lens (IOL) technology for presbyopia correction. The aim of the study was to report the real-life experience of patients after implantation of TECNIS Puresee IOL.

Setting

The study was an interventional, prospective, case series with 1 month of follow-up. Patients requiring cataract surgery, without other concurrent ocular diseases, were implanted with TECNIS Puresee IOL..

Methods

We evaluated the visual outcomes through complete ophthalmologic assessments, contrast sensitivity measurements, and the administration of a patient satisfaction questionnaire. The main outcome measures were the unaided monocular and binocular visual acuity at distance, intermediate, and near vision. The secondary outcomes were post operative visual disturbances, spectacle independence, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction.

Results

We included 44 eyes(22 patients; aged 65.7±6.1 years). At post operative month 1, mean binocular uncorrected logMAR visual acuities were 0.07±0.11 for distance, 0.18±0.09 for intermediate, and 0.23±0.12 for near, and BCVA for distance was 0.00±0.02. More than 90% had “never” or “a little” postoperative visual disturbances. 95% achieved spectacle independence for distance and intermediate vision. The binocular defocus curve showed sustained vision of 0.2logMAR or better VA up to –2D. Contrast sensitivity was within normal limit under photopic, mesopic, mesopic with glare. Satisfaction scores were high at 8.85, 9.38 and 8.38 for distance, intermediate and near vision respectively. 100% of patients would choose to recommend the IOL to friends.

Conclusions

TECNIS Puresee IOL provided patients with good binocular uncorrected distance & intermediate visual acuity & functional near vision, with little or no bother from glare, halos, or starbursts.
