Purpose
Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures, especially among the elderly population. As cataracts are a leading cause of vision impairment in older adults, timely surgical intervention is crucial for maintaining their quality of life and independence.
However, the cancellation of cataract surgery appointments poses significant inconveniences for patients. Elderly individuals often face additional challenges in rescheduling, which can exacerbate their visual impairment and reduce their ability to perform daily activities. Furthermore, cancellations can lead to considerable emotional distress and physical discomfort, as patients are often required to undergo pre-operative preparations multiple times.
Setting
Ashford and St Peters hospital. DGH
Methods
The data collected from all cataract surgeries performed at Ashford and St Peter's Hospital over two years was analysed.
Results
The findings of the reaudit underscore a pivotal shift in the management of cancellations, revealing a noteworthy decrease from 15.51% to 7.96%. Such a substantial reduction not only signifies the effectiveness of the implemented changes but also highlights the significance of addressing cancellation rates within healthcare systems.
Conclusions
The success of the implemented changes in halving cancellation rates serves as a testament to the effectiveness of proactive management strategies. By identifying root causes, implementing targeted interventions, and continuously monitoring outcomes, healthcare providers can mitigate the factors contributing to cancellations and enhance service delivery. This success story is not limited to the local or regional level but resonates on a broader scale, serving as a model for best practices in healthcare management.
In conclusion, the reduction of unnecessary cancellations represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to optimise healthcare delivery within the NHS.
