Purpose
To determine the degree of heterogeneity and diversity in Phacoemulsification Cataract surgery practice patterns among Egyptian Ophthalmologists .
Setting
Multiple Egyptian Public and private hospitals .
Methods
An online survey of 17 questions was sent to 200 Egyptian Ophthalmologists who performed a minimum of 500 Phacoemulsification Cataract surgeries.
Results of the survey were statistically analyzed using Chi Square test , Cramer's V correlation and Shannon entropy .
Questions covered perioperative and intraoperative regimens .
Results
111 doctors responded to the survey with a response rate of 55.5% .
Most of the responders:
Prefer Divide and Conquer technique
Avoid preoperative systemic Abx &topical NSAIDs
Avoid intracameral steroids in hard cataracts.
Prefer dispersive OVDs
Wait 1 week until operating the fellow eye
Schedule the first day postoperative for FU
Avoid post operative Antiglucoma drugs
There was high heterogeneity between responders regarding :
Technique
Post operative Antiglucoma drugs
Pre op topical NSAIDs &systemic Abx.
1st FU timing
There was high diversity regarding :
Technique
Interval until fellow eye
Frequency of Post Op steroid , Abx &FU visits
Post Op systemic Abx&Topical NSAIDs
Timing of VA measurement
Astigmatism less than 3 D treatment
Intracameral Abx
Conclusions
There is Significant heterogeneity and diversity in Phacoemulsification Cataract surgery practice patterns among Egyptian Ophthalmologists .
