Purpose
A large scale audit on complications of elective phacoemulsification and IOL implant in a community setting over a period of 6 months mainly focusing on rates of vitreous loss and comparing rates against established guidelines
Setting
High volume cataract surgery in multicentred comminty ophthalmology hospitals in the United Kingdom
Methods
Retrospective data collection of comlications that have occurred between January 2023 and June 2023 . collating and analysis of data and presenting them in an audit form
Results
The average complication rate in the 6 month period was 0.6%.
Of the complications 61 eyes suffered PC loss ( 37%) -commonest complication
13 eyes had dropped nucleus ( 0.07% )
17 eyes required a second operative procedure ( 1%)
Conclusions
- The findings are favourable that CHEC as an organisation is delivering a high quality of cataract surgery to NHS patients .
- The average serious complication rate( PC loss) in CHEC was lower than the national rates as evidenced by the recent NOD audit and NICE recommendation.
- The number of cataract surgeries performed by CHEC ( as a prominent ISP-independent sector provider) was significant thereby contributing to lower NHS cataract surgery waiting lists-this is confirmed by data published by Royal College of ophthalmologists that ‘from a third (34%) of NHS-funded cataract procedures delivered by ISPs in December 2020, this jumped to 55% in January 2021 and then a high of 59% in February 2021’.
