Purpose
Pseudoexfoliative syndrome is a systemic disorder associated with age, which can affect the whole body, as well as the eye. It is characterized by abnormal production and accumulation of pseudoexfoliative material.
To determine the frequency of patients with pseudoexfoliative Sy in two different regions of Serbia.
Setting
Eye Clinic University Medical Center Zvezdara, Belgrade, Serbia
Eye Clinic University Clinical Center, Kragujevac, Serbia
Methods
The study included 7451 patients scheduled for cataract surgery in two regions of Serbia. It was conceived as a multicenter, retrospective study with evaluation of medical records of all patients who underwent cataract surgery. The study evaluated the frequency of pseudoexfoliative syndrome and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, age and sex of patients, as well as preoperative antiglaucoma therapy and complications of intraoperative and postoperative cataract surgery.
Results
Pseudoexfoliative syndrome was recorded in 676 patients (407 women and 269 men), while 243 patients had pseudoexfoliative glaucoma. It included 3.26% of the patients included in the study. The average age of patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma was 78.1 ± 2.1 years with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the incidence in women compared to men. Intraoperative and postoperative complications during cataract surgery were significantly more frequent in patients with pseudoexfoliations (p < 0.05).
Conclusions
Pseudoexfoliations can complicate cataract surgery, while on the other hand, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma is more difficult to treat and control than most other glaucomas. For this reason, patients with pseudoexfoliation require special treatment. This paper shows that with the advancement of surgical techniques, therapeutic approaches are also changing in accordance with the functional effectiveness of surgical methods. However, increased knowledge is required before specific recommendations can be given.
