Purpose
To compare the visual, keratometric, Pachymetric and high order aberration results. of tissue augmentation of XENIA implants first version since five years and Version IV for six months follow up
Setting
Comparative, interventional combined retrospective and prospective study between two groups that was done in one center in Alexandria , the first group with advanced keratoconus and tissue augmentation with decellurelised porcine lenticule, compared to the second group of 15 eyes of advanced keratoconus with implantation of XENIA implants at three centers in ALexandria, Ciro and Thessaloniki started on October 2024
Methods
Tissue augmentation with XENIA implants; which are decellularised porcine lenticules of two different thickness and two different diameters were inserted in a femtosecond laser created pocket; using Visuomax machine
First Group Seven eyes of advanced keratoconus with clear cornea were implanted with XENIA implants version I of 100 micron thickness at 100 micron level from the epithelium, diameter of 7-7.5 mm and followed up for five years.
Second Group: 15 eyes of advanced keratoconus with clear cornea that were implanted with XENIA implants of 40 microns and were cross linked , implanted at level of 220 microns witha diameter of 6.75 mm and followed up for six months.
All eyes of first group were cross linked three months after implantation.
Results
The results of both groups showed no immunological reaction, no signs of rejection of the lenticules after five years for the first group and six months for the second group. with improvement of the visual acuity in both groups and increased.
The BCVA also was better in group 2 than in group 1.
The detailed results of the keratometric readings , high order aberrations, visual acuity improvement, comparison of the groups will be ready before the presentation time to have the six months follow up for group 2
Conclusions
The process of tissue adding in advanced keratoconus cases will decrease the need of Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty witth the tissue augmentation with XENIA implants that improved the visual acuity and decreased the high order aberrations in both the first version and fourth version of the implants.
