Purpose

To evaluate visual and refractive outcomes, as well as patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of an Extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Ophtalmology

Methods

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent bilateral RayONE EMV IOL implantation during cataract surgery. Patients who were followed up for at least 6 months were included in the study. Patients’ monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UIVA), distance corrected intermediate visual acuity(DCIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA), corrected near visual acuity(CNVA) and contrast sensitivity were measured at the 1st and 6th months postoperatively. Defocus curves and spectacle independence were recorded. Visual symptoms and satisfaction were assessed using the CatQuest-9SF questionnaire.

Results

50 eyes of 25 patients were included. Mean age was 63.64±10.53 years (range:29-78). At Month-6, the mean spherical equivalent was -0.57±0.44 D(range:-1.75 - 0.38).The mean binocular UDVA was 0.02±0.03 (range: 0-0.1) logMAR, while binocular CDVA was 0.01±0.02 (range: 0-0.04) logMAR. Binocular UDVA was 0.04 logMAR or better in 96% of patients, UIVA was 0.2 logMAR or better in 68% of patients, and UNVA was 0.3 logMAR or better in 80% of patients. 60% of patients needed additional power for near vision. The mean additional power for near vision was 1.33±0.34 D (range: 0.75-2). All patients were independent of spectacles at intermediate and far distances.Total satisfaction was achieved in 96% of patients.

Conclusions

Bilateral implantation of EDOF IOL provided excellent visual outcomes at intermadiate and distance vision with a high level of satisfaction.
