Purpose

To compare the incidence of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after implantation of three types of monofocal hydrophilic intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting

Nour El Hayah Eye Hospital

Methods

In the present study, patients with senile cataract who underwent phacoemulsification by a single surgeon received three different types of hydrophilic IOLs:

  • Group 1: Akreos, Bausch and Lomb
  • Group 2: Ocuflex, Care Group Gujarat, India
  • Group 3: Aqualens, Optaline, Cairo, Egypt

All patients were followed up for a minimum of 12 months. The PCO was graded clinically and scored using the EPCO 2000 software.

Results

Ninety eyes of ninety patients were included. There was no significant difference in the PCO with respect to age, gender, or the presence of systemic disease. The median PCO score was 0.035, 0.045, and 0.051 in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The PCO grade and score differences between the groups were statistically insignificant, with P > 0.05.

Conclusions

The rate of PCO and the need for YAG laser treatment among the three lens designs probably contributed to the minimal, visually significant PCO in all groups in our study. However, PCO scores were lower in Group 1 (Akreos–Bausch and Lomb IOLs), but there was no statistically significant difference.
