Purpose

To observe and compare the differences in post op corneal endothelial cell count , increase in macular thickness , conjunctival hyperaemia , pain ,flare between phacoemulsification with cold saline and room temperature saline .

Setting

prasad netralaya super speciallity eye hospital

Methods

This is a prospective observational study conducted from January 2024to June 2024. 50 patients with bilateral senile immature cataract undergoing phacoemulsification for both eyes were selected . Their pre-operative endothelial cell count and macular thickness was assessed . One eye was subjected to cold saline phacoemulsification and the other to room temperature phacoemulsification by the same surgeon . The post operative parameters considered for the study were then assessed on day 1 , day 7 and day 30 . the results were tabulated and compared .

Results

It was found that the corneal endothelial cell count loss , conjunctival hyperaemia , flare  , pain was comparatively less when cold saline was used for phacoemulsification (p<0.05). However there was no significant difference noted in the macular thickness between the two groups .

Conclusions

This study gives an insight into the fact that usage of cold saline during phacoemusilfication  is beneficial over room temperature saline . It wound help in a speedy recovery rate post phacoemuilsification surgery .
