Purpose
The purpose of this study was to report the results of Phakic IOL for refractive correction in stable corneal ectatic disorders.
.
Setting
This is a case series and literature review.
Methods
This study included three patients with corneal ectatic disorders. The first patient was a 26-year-old male with keratoconus who had undergone corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) 3 years ago and his disease has been stable since then. The second patient was a 30-year-old male with pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) whose disease had been stable for 3 years. The third patient was a 32-year-old male with keratoconus whose disease had been stable for 4 years. All three patients were implanted with Visian Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (TICL) (STAAR Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland).
Results
On the first post-operative day, all three patients had uncorrected vision of ≥6/9 in both of their eyes. Vaulting was adequate (250-750 microns) in each eye. No complications were noted in any case. The visual acuity and topography were stable on further follow-ups for upto several months in each patient.
Conclusions
Phakic IOLs are a great option for refractive correction in patients with corneal ectatic disorders. However, the topographic and refractive stability of these disorders must be ensured before planning the surgery.
