Refractive Surgery – Our Results

To report our results of different techniques of refractive surgery, SMILE,FEMTOLASIK,PRK,performed at our center.

Subjective refraction, based on Snellen rule and cycloplegic evaluation remains the most important and challenging selecting criterias. Cornea profile and AXL measurement, examined at 3 D corneal topography (Pentacam) are also very important to precise the corneal thickness,thinnest point and detect keratoconus or forme fruste of keratoconus,not to be considered as good candidates for refractive surgery. Optical Coherence tomography is also important to rule out  any subclinic changes in macular profile. weeks.

82 eyes  were treated at HEC with PRK, Femtolasik,Smile Visumax 500 at Hygeia Eye Center Tirana. Post operative controls were performed 2nd day post-op,1 week,1 month, 3 months and 1 year post op.7 cases of unilateral anisometropia.7 eyes hypermetropic and astigmatismus,46 eyes were myopic and 20 eyes with myopia et myopic astigmatismus. Careful subjective and objective ophthalmic examination was performed pre-operatively, according to our protocol.  Visual acuity recovering was faster in patients treated with Smile (2-3 hours post-operatively), those treated with femtolasik (1-2 days post-op and in PRK 1 -2 week.All the patients achieved pre-operative subjective visual acuity (BVCA).99.9%were satisfied with their post-operative result.

The last decade has shown a real perfection in Refractive Surgery techniques. With minimally invasive techniques , we actually have at our disposal, we can treat a wide range of refractive errors including myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatismus. The post operative result, immediate and longterm , still depends on a careful pre operative examination, which allows to choose the right candidate from the unappropriate cases.
