Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of astigmatism and total corneal aberration (HOA RMS/6 mm) on cyclotorsion measurement in subjects who underwent TransPRK (transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy) surgery.

Setting

A retrospective study was designed in a university hospital.

Methods

This retrospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Acibadem University Atakent Hospital. The study's objective was to analyze the records of 120 eyes (60 patients; 39 females, 21 males) who underwent TransPRK surgery between January and December of 2024. Prior to the surgical procedure, corneal total aberrometry and corneal astigmatism were measured using a Scheimflug-Placido Sirius tomographer (CSO Ophthalmic, Scandicci, Italy) with a 6-mm pupil diameter. The incyclotorsion was identified by a minus (-) form and the excylotorsion was vice versa.

Results

The mean age of the patients was 26.68 5.44 years. Preoperative spherical equivalent and astigmatism were -4.75±-2.18 D and -2.80±-0.74 D, respectively. The mean ablation time was 20 seconds per measurement. The maximum excylcotorsion was + 9.80 and the maximum incyclotorsion was -9,90. The mean torsion ( excyclo/incyclo ) was 1.42±3.43. No correlation was observed between the astigmatic degree and the amount of cyclotorsion (r=0.003;p=0.977). Also there was no statistically significant relationship between total HOA RMS (6 mm) and cyclotorsion levels (r=0.034;p=0,710).

Conclusions

This study is the first study on the relationship between corneal aberrations and cyclotorsion. The relationship between astigmatism and cyclotorsion, which is particularly effective on postoperative outcomes, was examined and no relationship was found.
