Purpose

To describe the indications and surgical options in the management of Mooren's ulcer

Setting

The management of Mooren's ulcer involves medical treatment which includes topical and systemic immunosupression and surgery is indicated for tectonic, therapeutic and optical reasons.

Methods

The indications and types of surgical management of Mooren's ulcer are described with case examples.

Results

There are tectonic, therapuetic and optical indications. The surgical options include amniotic membrane grafts, conjunctival resection/recession techniques, lamellar patch grafts, deep lamellar keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty and tissue adhesive with bandage lens. A technique of crescentic corneal lamellar patch graft is described. The harvesting of the lamellar graft was performed using a low cost technique without the use of an artifical chamber.

Conclusions

Mooren's ulcer is an autoimmune inflammatory peripheral ulcerative keratitis which requires medical management and surgical intervention when indicated. We describe a low cost technique of harvesting the lamellar patch graft.
