Purpose
In 2023, an iris-fixated phakic IOL, was introduced for the correction of presbyopia. This Artiplus model 470 (Ophtec) is based on the Artiflex design, which is used for correcting myopia. It uses a multi-segment optic that enlarges the depth of field in a defocus range of 0 to -2.5 D. The explantability in case of intolerance is to be regarded as an advantage. The aim of this study is to measure the Through Focus Response of this lens and to compare it with other IOL models.
Setting
Medical University of Vienna, Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry
Methods
An Artiplus model 470 was examined on an optical bench. The examination was performed with an artificial cornea with an aberration of 0.2 µm and a pupil opening of 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm. An aberration-neutral IOL (409MP, Zeiss) with a refractive power of 20.0 D was used as a substitute for the natural lens for the Artiplus models 470 examination. For comparison, the Primus-HD (OphthalmoPro) with a spherical aberration correction of -0.2 µm, Precizon Presbyopic NVA model 570/A1 with +20.0 D (Ophtec), Synergy with +20.0 D (Jonson & Jonson) were examined.
Results
The through focus of the Artiplus model 470 has a bifocal light distribution dominated by distance with a pupil opening of 3 mm and an almost equal light distribution between distance and near with a pupil of 4.5 mm. In contrast, the Through Focus Response of the Primus-HD has a very steep and narrow light distribution. The Precizon Presbyopic NVA model 570/A1 has a slightly different light distribution than the Artiplus, while the light distribution of the Synergy shows a trifocal design with a stronger weighting of the incident light for the distance focus
Conclusions
The Artiplus model 470 produces a bifocal light distribution and therefore has a light distribution profile comparable to that of capsule-fixed multifocal intraocular lenses.
