Purpose
To compare the visual and rotational stability outcomes of Tecnis Eyhance Toric II and Alcon Clareon Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients undergoing cataract surgery with corneal astigmatism. The study aims to evaluate postoperative refraction, IOL axis stability, near and intermediate visual acuity, and surgeon satisfaction regarding intraoperative handling and outcomes.
Setting
A prospective, randomized, 6-month clinical study conducted at a tertiary ophthalmic center. Seventy eyes of 70 subjects with cataract and corneal astigmatism were enrolled. Patients with coexisting corneal, anterior segment, or posterior segment diseases were excluded. The study is designed to assess early and long-term outcomes of both toric IOLs in a controlled clinical environment.
Methods
Subjects underwent routine cataract surgery with implantation of either Tecnis Eyhance Toric II or Alcon Clareon Toric IOL. Postoperative evaluations included refraction and IOL axis measurements at Days 1, 7, 21, and 90. Surgeon satisfaction was assessed through a structured questionnaire evaluating intraoperative handling and postoperative visual performance.
Results
The study is ongoing, with 65 subjects enrolled and 40 having completed all follow-ups. All follow-ups are expected to conclude by Nov 2024. Early results indicate Eyhance Toric II provides UIVA of N12-N10 (Log 0.1-0.2) with Avg Add +0.75 and UNVA of N12-N18 (Log 0.2-0.3) with Avg Add +1.25. Clareon Toric provides UIVA of N12 with Avg Add +1.00 and UNVA of N18 with Avg Add +1.50.
Conclusions
Preliminary data suggests Tecnis Eyhance Toric II demonstrates comparable or superior rotational stability to Alcon Clareon Toric. Patients with Eyhance Toric require less reading addition. Intraoperative stability of Eyhance is better than Clareon, leading to higher surgeon satisfaction. Further data will confirm these trends upon study completion.
