Purpose

The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the capsular bag performance, the PCO formation as well as lens axial shift, tilt and centration of a new hydrophobic IOL with a sharp edge design (Enova GF3 IOL, VSY Biotechnology, Germany), compared to a standard monofocal hydrophobic IOL Tecnis 1-piece ZCB00 (Johnson & Johnson, USA) in a bilateral intra-individual comparison design.

Setting

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery (VIROS)

Methods

This was a randomized, controlled, double-masked trial in 90 eyes of 45 patients. The following examinations were performed: slitlamp examination, autorefraction, subjective refraction (UDVA,CDVA, UIVA, DCIVA), biometry with the IOLMaster 700, anterior segment OCT, retroillumination photography, Purkinjemeter, intraoperative
photography, as well as a surgeon and patient questionnaire (CATQUEST 9SF).

Results

So far 30 patients have been included (43.5% female, 56.5% male). The mean age was 72.3. ± 6.3 years. The change in aqueous depth showed a mean of -1.29mm in the ENOVA group and -1.59 mm in the ZCB00 group after 6 months, wich is a significant differnce (p0.012). Importantly there was no significant differnce within the groups. There was a similar IOL unfolding time but slightly easier IOL injector use for the ZCB00. The UDVA, CDVA, DCIVA and UIVA, increased significant in both groups after 3 moths. The mean tilt was 2.83° and 2.27° and the mean decentration in mm was 0.37 and 0.23 in the ENOVA group and the ZCB group respectively. The PCO formation rate after 6 months was 3.48% and 2.72% in the ENOVA group and the ZCB group respectively.

Conclusions

The study showed a significant difference in ACD change between the two groups (greater ACD in the ZCB00 group) but importantly no significant difference within the groups. There was no significant difference in, IOL tilt and decentration, UDVA,CDVA, UIVA, DCIVA as well as no significant difference in PCO formation. Moreover IOL unfolding time was similar but the IOL injector use for the ZCB00 seemed to be slightly easier. The ENOVA IOL has a similar capsular bag performance as the control IOL and over all a good patient satisfaction (CATQUEST 9SF). Detailed results of all patients will be presented.
