Purpose
To evaluate the distance and near achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity function (CSF) outcomes in eyes implanted with a new purely refractive partial range of field extended IOL.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain
Methods
A total of 34 eyes of 17 patients ranging in age from 56 to 73 years old were included in this study. All subjects underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of the TECNIS PureSee™ IOL (Johnson & Johnson Vision). Visual, refractive, photopic binocular distance achromatic CSF (CSV-1000 test) and near achromatic and chromatic CSF (Optopad-CSF test) outcomes were evaluated at 3 months after surgery.
Results
Mean postoperative logMAR corrected distance, and distance-corrected intermediate and near visual acuity were -0.03±0.06, 0.15±0.05, and 0.27±0.08, respectively. Mean postoperative distance achromatic log contrast sensitivity (CS) values for 3, 6, 12 and 18 cycles/º were 1.63±0.16, 2.00±0.17, 1.35±0.25 and 0.75±0.28, respectively. Likewise, mean log achromatic near CS values for 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 cycles/º were 1.56±0.19, 1.85±0.16, 1.53±0.24, and 0.81±0.32, respectively, being within the range of normality defined for phakic age-related patients or close to the lower limit of such range. Postoperative CSF for red-green and blue-yellow channels were also within the range of normality for most of patients (over 80%).
Conclusions
The purely refractive partial RoF extended IOL TECNIS PureSee™ provides an effective rehabilitation of the distance, intermediate and near visual function, with good levels of quality of vision associated. These preliminary outcomes must be confirmed in future studies with larger samples sizes and comparing with a control group.
