Purpose
To describe the intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of cataract surgery in pediatric cataract.
Setting
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur, India
Methods
A prospective study was conducted, including 63 eyes with unilateral or bilateral congenital cataract with age £12 years. Preoperatively examination under general anesthesia was performed for lens morphology, detailed anterior segment and posterior segment examination and ocular biometry, before cataract surgery. All patients were followed up to one year.
Results
A total of 63 eyes of 33 patients were included. The mean age of subjects was 4.66±2.45 years. 91% of the patients presented with bilateral cataract. More than half of the patients presented to us after one year of age. A white pupil was the most common symptom noted, followed by deviation of eyes. Lamellar cataract was the most common type of morphology. 20% had anterior capsular plaque and 15% had pre-existing posterior capsule rupture, recorded intraoperatively.
Visual axis opacification was seen until last follow-up in only 1/63 eyes(1.5%).
Conclusions
Lack of awareness in the region leads to delay in surgery in pediatric cataracts in Western Rajasthan. Rate of change of axial length and keratometry is lower after 2 years of age, to be consider for IOL power calculation preoperatively.
