Purpose

The purpose of the present study is to analyze the differences in visual behavior when implanting an extended depth of focus (EDOF) monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with different geometry in its design.

Setting

Cruces University Hospital, Barakaldo, Spain

Methods

Prospective observational randomized study. Patients who required cataract surgery in both eyes were included. Patiens in one group were implanted with an ICB00 (Eyhance) EDOF monofocal IOL and the other group with EDOF monofocal IOL, ArtIOL25. One month after surgery in the second eye, the best corrected binocular visual acuity (VA) is determined at far, intermediate (66 cm) and near. Likewise, defocus curve is determined. We also explored the correlation between spherical aberration and pupillary diameter with intermediate VA. The Vision-related Quality of Life Questionnaire (Catquest-9SF) is presented to all patients to assess quality of life after IOL implantation.

Results

We analyze 30 patients (60 eyes), 15 patients in the Eyhance group and 15 in the ArtIOL25 group. Both gropus achieved a far-VA of 0.00 logMAR. On the other hand, in intermediate vision, the VA obtained were 0.20 LogMAR in both groups. The near VA was 0.30 logMAR with Eyhance and 0.40 logMAR with ArtIOL25. No correlation was found between corneal spherical aberration, pupillary diameter with intermediate VA. The Catquest-9SF was near 1 in both groups, better in the Eyhance group, the difference being statistically significant (p 0.035).

Conclusions

Both lenes, ArtIOL25 and Eyhance offers sufficient depth of focus to provide patients with comfortable vision without impairing far vision.
According to the quality of life test presented, the IOL Eyhance provides a greater improvement in the quality of life of patients.
