Purpose
To evaluate the effect of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) on baseline preoperative parameters of patients undergoing refractive surgery
Setting
Care-Laser center, Tel-Aviv, Israel
Methods
Patients undergoing routine refractive surgery between July 2020 to January 2023 were included in this study. Among other routine preoperative medical evaluation of our patients, their MGD levels were also assessed. We compared the differences of the baseline preoperative parameters of the patient with MGD of above 3 to those with MGD of below.
Results
A total of 8122 eyes were included in this study. MGD eyes (above MGD 3) was interestingly noted in the majority of the population (52.8%) as compared with the non MGD eyes 3831 (below MGD 3) eyes. The average age of the patients with MGD was significantly higher than patients with non-MGD (p<0.001). The preoperative pachymetry was significantly lower in eyes with MGD compared to non-MGD (p<0.001). The preoperative minimal keratometry (K) (p<0.001) and average K (p=0.01) were significantly higher in the MGD eyes. Finally Preoperative spherical equivalent was significantly higher in the MGD eyes (<0.001).
Conclusions
The majority of the young adult population who undergo refractive surgery have Meibomian gland dysfunction. Even in few years difference, age seems to play a role in MGD development. Severe MGD may lead to thinner central corneal thickness and increase the preoperative spherical equivalent measurement.
