Purpose
To compare the reading speed of presbyopes with cataract after bilateral Panoptix implantation with presbyopes without cataract or with mild cataract (BCDVA: 0.1 LogMAR or better) through Chinese validated version of International Reading Speed Texts(IReST) with best distance correction.
Setting
A prospective comparative study.
Methods
A prospective comparative study. Presbyopes with age-related cataract and junior high school education or above who would be implanted with PanOptix bilaterally targeting emmetropia were be enrolled in the experimental group. The control group were created by matching the experimental group in terms of age and education level. Reading speed at 40cm (International Reading Speed Test (IReST) Chinese version),visual acuity and visual quality, spectacle independence were evaluated 3 months postoperatively.
Results
A total of 42 patients with bilateral implantation of PanOptix and 42 presbyopes without cataract or with mild cataract (BCDVA: 0.1 LogMAR or better) were enrolled in the experimental and control group respectively. The reading speed of the experimental group was significantly better than that of the control group (216.82±36.04 vs. 165.10±70.66 characters per minute, respectively, p<0.05). Binocular UDVA, UIVA, DCIVA,UNVA, DCNVA of the experimental group was significant better than the control group.( p<0.05).
Conclusions
Bilateral implantation of PanOptix in presbyopes can achieve better reading speed and intermediate vision than presbyopes without cataract or with mild cataract of the same age.
