Purpose
Identifying preop conditions prior to LASIK to avoid induced ocular dry eye complications with the four criteria eTAO Dry Eye Score.
Setting
Retrospective study of 50 patients who consulted our center between May 2021 and December 2023 for LASIK-related dry eye complaints
Methods
We retrospectively analyzed whether LASIK-induced dry eye could be avoided with the realization of a dry eye score eTAO.
Results
42 of the 50 patients included in this study should not have undergone LASIK, as the eTAO score clearly showed that this was the wrong indication.
Conclusions
Our pre-operative diagnostic method, eTAO, aims to prevent most of the avoidable dry eye complications caused by atrophy or obstruction of the Meibomian glands, the presence of peri-glandular telangiectasia and atrophy of the corneal epithelium. Apart from neuropathic pain, the other complications associated with dry eye can be avoided with the eTAO method.
