Purpose

To obtain functional near vision in patients undergoing cataract surgery by implanting a new toric monofocal plus lens

Setting

Prospective interventional case serie

Methods

Patients who underwent cataract surgery with cataract and corneal astigmatism were implanted with a new toric monofocal plus lens from march to August of 2023. Outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA),uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA),refractive outcomes, Defocus curves, spectacle independence, photic phenomena, ultra biomicroscopy (UBM), corneal spherical aberration and postoperative patient satisfaction questionnaire. Dominant eyes(DE) were targeted for emmetropia and non-dominant eyes(NDE) were targeted for mini monovision. In relation with astigmatism, lenses where targeted to maximum possible correction.

Results

30 eyes of 15 patients were included. The mean monocular UDVA was 0.7 preoperatively and 0.0 LogMar postoperatively. Mean UIVA was 0.0 LogMar and UNVA mean was 0.3 LogMar postoperatively . Mean spherical equivalent was -0.47 diopters (min-1.50 , max 1.25 diopters SD 0.56) after surgery. Mean corneal positive spherical aberration was 0.17 micros, and some degree of correlation was noticed between postoperatively UNVA and spectacle independence. No photic phenomena was reported by patients. All implants were placed in the bag and controlled by UBM

Conclusions

Bilateral Toric mono focal plus IOL implantation targeted for mini monovision provided good visual acuity results for far and intermediate uncorrected visual acuity with functional near vision, high level of patient satisfaction and spectacle independence, and a no photic phenomena.
