Purpose
To evaluate the effectiveness of ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.
Setting
-
Methods
The study was led on 24 eyes of 12 rabbits of the chinchilla breed. An experimental model of bacterial conjunctivitis was caused by a suspension of a daily agar culture of Staphylococcus aureus (1-2*108 CFU/ml). In first group of animals, treatment was carried out with instillations of a 0.5% solution of moxifloxacin 4 times a day. Animals of second group were placed in the conjunctival cavity with an ophthalmic medicinal film with moxifloxacin. The control group of animals received sterile saline throughout the experiment.
Results
On the second day after infection, the development of an acute purulent inflammatory process of the conjunctiva of the eye was observed in the control group of animals. In experimental first group, an inflammatory reaction of the conjunctiva was observed, which resolved on the fourth day. A morphological study confirmed the presence of residual signs of the inflammatory process in the structures of the eyeball. In experimental second group, biomicroscopically, no inflammatory reactions in the eyes of rabbits were detected. Histological examination of the eyes of rabbits was characterized by the absence of signs of inflammation of the eyeball.
Conclusions
Experimental studies have shown that the use of ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin has a pronounced therapeutic effect compared to the group where the instillation method of this antibiotic was used.
