Purpose
To evaluate the difference in contrast sensitivity (CS) between one measurement (group 1) versus the mean of two measurements (group 2) after lenticule removal procedure with the new femtosecond laser system: ELITA.
Setting
Methods
One hundred and twenty subjects were treated with mean age of 26.6±5.9 SD. For each subject, a lenticule was created in both eyes using ELITA and was then removed for vision correction. Mean pre-op MRSE was -4.20D and ranged from -1.25D to -9.63D. Contrast sensitivity data was measured at pre-op, and then starting at the 3-month post-op visit. CS was measured and repeated twice in mesopic conditions with and without glare at 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, and 12.0 cpd; and in photopic conditions with no glare at 3.0, 6.0, 12.0. and 18.0 cpd. MRSE and monocular UCVA and BSCVA were assessed at those time points
Results
No significant CS difference was found between groups except at 6 M postop, a difference of 0.04 log units (mesopic, no glare, 3 cpd), and 0.05 log units (mesopic, glare, 12 cpd) was observed, below the clinically significant threshold of 0.3 log units. Preoperatively, the mean CS was 1.36 log units (photopic, no glare, 18 cpd) for both. Post op, CS remained consistent between groups: 1.36/1.35 (3M), 1.45/1.45(6M), 1.47/1.50 (9M), and 1.52/1.52 (12M). MRSE was -0.27D and -0.31D at 3 and 6M postop. Monocular UCVA/BSCVA was 20/20 or better for 93%/100% of eyes (3M), and 94%/99% of eyes (6M).
Conclusions
No significant difference in CS was found between group 1 and 2 after lenticule procedure. CS increased post op for the photopic condition at 18 compared to pre-op but it was not statistically significant. The good visual outcomes demonstrate that the ELITA system is safe and effective.
