Purpose

To evaluate the intra-individual visual acuity of an aspherical monofocal and bifocal extended depth of field (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL)used in mix-and-match approach with the aim of an extended monovision.

Setting

Single private center retrospective consecutive case series.

Methods

All patients underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of an aspherical monofocal IOL (HOYA Vivinex XC1-SP) in the dominant eye (target refraction closest to SE of 0 D) and a bifocal EDOf IOL (LENTIS Comfort-LS-313 MF15) in the non-dominant eye with a target refraction closest to SE -1.25 D. Uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity were assessed (UDVA, UIVA and UNVA). The binocular defocus curves and UDVA, UIVA and UNVA visual acuity were assessed. In addition, stereopsis, and patient satisfaction using the PRISQ have been reported.

Results

A total of 45 patients (90 eyes) were includes in the study. The mean UDVA, UIVA and UNVA for all eyes with monofocal IOLs were 0.0, 0.14, 0.41 logMAR and 0.35, -0.05 und 0.04 logMAR for the EDOF IOL, respectively. Average Log (seconds of arc) binocular uncorrected stereopsis was 1.88 whereas corrected was 1.62. All patients never needed glasses for far and intermediate distances and 32 (71.1%) of them did not need glasses for near vision.

Conclusions

Excellent combined distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was demonstrated for both IOLs. The mix-and-match approach described in this study high patient satisfaction.
