Purpose
To describe optical tomography coherence (OCT) corneal ectasia screening parameters, assessed through Anterion OCT (Heidelberg, Germany), Scheimpflug based tomographic and biomechanical corneal ectasia screening parameters given by Pentacam HR (OCULUS, Germany) and Corvis ST (OCULUS, Germany) in a cohort of Portuguese teenagers, and to correlate the parameters between devices.
Setting
Centro Hospitalar e Universitário do Porto, Porto, Portugal
Methods
Cross-sectional study. Corneal tomography data included the Index of surface variance (ISV), Index of vertical asymmetry (IVA), Keratoconus Index (KI), Central keratoconus index (CKI), Index of height asymmetry (IHA), Index of height decentration (IHD) and the tomography-derived Belin/Ambrosio Deviation (BAD D). Corneal biomechanics included the Corvis Biomechanical factor (CBI), Tomographic and biomechanical factor (TBI) and the new version of TBI (TBIv2). OCT parameters included SCORE, Epithelium Mean Thickness (EMT), Epithelium Thinnest Point (ETP), Epithelium Inferior-Superior asymmetry (EI-S). Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated.
Results
SCORE was correlated with CBI, TBI, TBIv2, KI, IHA and BAD-D.
EMT was correlated with the CBI, TBI andTBIv2.
The present study included 126 eyes from 63 individuals, with a mean age at baseline of 16.6(+-2.6) years old.
Conclusions
The present study found correlations between SS-OCT- derived ectasia risk parameter SCORE and the main ectasia risk parameters from both corneal tomography and corneal biomechanics by means of Scheimpflug image. Furthermore, correlations were found between epithelium mean thickness and the main ectasia risk parameters from corneal biomechanics by means of Scheimpflug image.
These findings highlight the potential for the integration of both Scheimpflug image and SS-OCT derived measures in the ectasia risk screening in young individuals.
